I'm starting off with clay ornaments. I really liked this homemade clay recipe as it baked really quickly and very hard, so it was very easy to create quite a number of gingerbread houses.
The clay recipe is very popular on Pinterest. I used this one.
Some of my own tips for making this home made clay:
- Don't overcook it. The mixture starts off as a liquid, but gradually thickens. Use a low flame and stir fairly consistently.
- Remove it from the fire when it is still fairly sticky. You can add cornstarch to combat extra stickiness.
- Knead it until it is smooth
- Turn at least once when baking. The oven should be low.
- Paint with acrylic
- Seal with clear acrylic.
- The clay works really well if it is air dried too!
Here are my gingerbread houses thus far...
