Clay Ornaments

I'm refusing to purchase "made in China" ornaments for my tree this year. I've decided to create handmade items to hang in the most colourful and eclectic way.

I'm starting off with clay ornaments. I really liked this homemade clay recipe as it baked really quickly and very hard, so it was very easy to create quite a number of gingerbread houses.

The clay recipe is very popular on Pinterest. I used this one.

Some of my own tips for making this home made clay:

  • Don't overcook it. The mixture starts off as a liquid, but gradually thickens. Use a low flame and stir fairly consistently.

  • Remove it from the fire when it is still fairly sticky. You can add cornstarch to combat extra stickiness.
  • Knead it until it is smooth
  • Turn at least once when baking. The oven should be low.
  • Paint with acrylic
  • Seal with clear acrylic.
  • The clay works really well if it is air dried too!

Here are my gingerbread houses thus far...
